KEYNOTE – "DESIGN IS ALWAYS POLITICAL"
Hear from Jo Negrini, Chief Executive, London Borough of Croydon.
As the pressure to build more homes to accommodate growth intensifies, urban design can play a key role in managing conflicting demands. Arguments of gentrification in cities are fuelled by a lack of care and focus on the communities that are there now. Good urban design is about taking communities on a journey and providing a positive focus. An urban planner hailing from the suburbs in Sydney and now leading major design and regeneration projects in London, Jo will explore the role of urban design as a catalyst to connect communities and create cities where people feel valued. Drawing on her background in the suburbs and work on Windrush Square and the Black Cultural Archives, award-winning design projects in Brixton, London, Jo will look at the importance of design in signalling what we think about the culture and heritage of a place and what we are saying about how we want them to be in the future.

ABOUT JO NEGRINI
Jo, originally from Australia, has worked in regeneration and planning in London for more than twenty-eight years. Working on projects from small public improvements to major metropolitan regeneration, Jo has focused on making places that people can enjoy and own. As the Chief Executive of the fastest growing economy in London, she brings together the services of the council with partners to make Croydon a place where people want to be. Jo was awarded the 2018 New Londoner of the Year award by New London Architecture, for services to regeneration and her championship of equal rights.
